Although golf is a leisurely sport compared to many others, injuries can still occur, in particular to our lower back, wrist, elbow, head and eye. Injuries are often caused by overuse, incorrect technique and the aggravation of an old injury.
Some tips to help avoid injury are:
- Warm up and stretch before playing, pay attention to your back, shoulders and arms. Start with gentle movements followed by a few easy air swings.
- Take lessons. A good technique is the best defence against injuries.
- Stand well away from the other members of your group as they hit. Likewise take care and make sure no-one else is standing close by before you swing.
- Use well maintained equipment.
- Wear sun protection.
- Drink plenty of water before, during and after your game.
- Learn the basic rules and etiquette of the game.
- Don’t play until the group in front is out of the way.
- Give way to ground staff and wait until they call you to play on.
- Lift and carry clubs safely. When necessary use a buggy.
- Reconsider playing in extreme heat, or play in the early morning or twilight to avoid the hottest period of the day.
- Stop playing immediately when an illness or injury occurs and seek first aid help irrespective of how severe it is.
