A force of New South Wales and Western Australian players have dominated the Queensland Men’s & Women’s Stroke Play leaderboard after Round 2 today.
Doey Choi, 18, has left the Qld Women’s field in her wake as she produced back-to-back five-under rounds of 69 at McLeod Country Golf Club today.
The NSW State Team representative is hoping to emulate her success in the event from 2014 where she won the national ranking event as a 14-year-old.
“I played quite solid today and had a lot of fun out there. I didn’t make any bogies which was nice,” Choi beamed after her bogey free round.
“I feel like today was playing harder because it was lot windier than yesterday, but I hung in there and stuck to my game plan.”
Fellow Concord member Sophie Yip recorded rounds of 70-74 to sit six-shots adrift from Choi, with RACV’s Hye Park the only Queenslander in the top 5, a further shot back from Yip.
Hannah Reeves produced the best round of the day with a six-under 68, shaving 13-shots off her score from round one.
Royal Adelaide’s Billy Cawthorne, who captained this year’s Golf SA Interstate team, has emerged atop of the Qld Men’s Stroke Play leaderboard with rounds of 71-70.
A clutch eagle finish halted travel companion Jack Thompson from the top spot after Thompson produced a tournament best round of six-under 67, to sit one-shot back from Cawthorne.
“I played better today, and the weather was better which meant we didn’t have to deal with the rain all day which was nice,” Cawthorne said after his round.
“It’s good to be back in contention again. I’m going to try and get a good night sleep and prepare a lot of food for the bag.”
Western Australia’s Cooper Geddes and Zac Maxwell of Virginia also join Thompson in a three-way tussle for second with a 36-hole total of 142.
Sandhurst member Harry Smith had a memorable day on course with an ace on the par-3 12th.
“I hit a pitching wedge off the tee. It’s an elevated green hidden by a bunker so I didn’t know it actually went in until I was up there – I was pretty stoked,” said Smith.
A total of 50 men and 50 women will advance to tomorrow’s marathon 36-holes with the cut set at 151 (+5) for the men, and 169 (+21) for the women.
