Melville Glades Golf Club and Royal Fremantle Golf Club are preparing to host the Australian Men’s and Women’s Interstate Teams Matches respectively, to be played from 9-12 May.
The events return to the west for the first time since 2011. Royal Fremantle Golf Club hosted the men’s and women’s events in 2005, while Melville Glades Golf Club last hosted the women’s event in 1983.
The Championships are Australia’s premier team competitions for amateur golfers. NSW will be defending the men’s title, while Queensland will defend their women’s title. With 1997 being the last time the WA men won their title, they will be looking forward to a home state advantage. The WA women have been more successful in recent years, winning in 2011, 2012 and 2014.
Melville Glades Golf Club is one of Perth’s most loved golf clubs located just 20 minutes from the centre of the city. The parkland course nestled within tranquil bushland surrounds is sure to test the players. Royal Fremantle Golf Club will also prove challenging for the women, especially when the prevailing sea breeze, or the “Fremantle Doctor” arrives after midday!
The Australian Interstate Teams Matches see the top six women and top eight men from each State (and in the men’s event, the NT) contesting round robin match play, with the two leading teams after the round matches competing in the final.
