 Day Two- Hot and Windy!

Day two of the Men’s Sand Greens Fourball Championship brought with it hot and windy conditions.  This didn’t deter the players though will some great golf being played.  Marc Cummins and Matthew Hunter managed to hold off a fast finishing Sam Bolam and Adam Hall to take home the Nett overall winners prize.

Jacob Ryan and Tony Harding seemed to be in control the whole tournament shooting 7 under par on Saturday and 4 under on Sunday equalling a total of 11 under par for the tournament.  Dean Leach and James Taylor from Warren Golf Club managed to hold off James Egan and Chris Gilbert for second place.

Day One Action In Cobar

Today, the golf matched the weather conditions- hot!  Jay Egan stepped onto the first tee this morning, looked at his partner and said “ don’t worry mate it’s my hole.” He then proceeded to hammer a drive down the first splitting the fairway and backed it up with a solid 4 iron, chasing it up onto the green and leaving himself 13 feet for eagle….which he drained of course!

There was some great golf today from town local Jacob Ryan and his partner Tony Harding from Narromine Golf Club shooting an impressive 43 points in the scratch competition (7 under par). This puts them into the lead for the scratch competition. They are leading Jay Egan and Chris Gilbert by 5 shots.

In the nett competition there has been some monstrous scoring from Marc Cummins and Matt Hunter with a combined score of 50 points!  Nipping at their heels are Adam Hall and Sam Bolam who shot a score of 49 points.

With scores set to be as hot as today for tomorrow we hope the golfers can keep up the good scoring.

This weekend sees the Men’s Sand Green Fourball Championship return to Cobar Bowling and Golf Club.

With temperatures set to be above 35 degrees for both Saturday and Sunday it is fair to say golf this weekend will be a tough challenge.

Cobar Bowling and Golf Club has done it tough over summer after only receiving a total of 1mm of rain.

This meant the club had to source raw water to try and keep the course as green as they could.  Sadly for most regional clubs the cost of buying water to treat their courses just becomes too expensive.

It hasn’t dampened the spirits of the Cobar community and the full time course greens keeper Paul.

When we asked Paul about the condition of the course he was disappointed that the event wasn’t held before Christmas, saying he had the course greened up and it would have been a real treat.

The raw water treatment has managed to keep it green, but not as much as he’d liked.

The Sand Greens Championship events have a real aura of mateship and comradery.   The competitors in this event generally come from regional areas themselves that stretch as far from Holbrook to Walgett and from Narromine to Binalong, and understand the difficulties that come with maintaining a course in severe drought conditions.

But in true sand green spirit the condition of the courses doesn’t seem to concern the competitors, as long as the beers are cold in the clubhouse, their playing partners show up and they can share a few laughs at the end of day. The championship always seems to be a success.

If you’d like to keep up to date with all the tournament action links to the leader board can be found on Golf NSW website under the event section, or you can follow Golf NSW on Facebook and peruse through the photographs.

The tournament is due to tee off tomorrow at 9am Saturday the 17th of March.
