After an epic clash against No.3 seed Chantelle Cassidy, Victorian-based Queenslander Jade Shellback prevailed on the 19th hole of their Round of 16 clash this afternoon at Russley Golf Club.
And rolling on in the same ominous fashion as he did last year, Brisbane's Louis Dobbelaar steamrolled into the corresponding position in the men's tournament with a dominant 3&2 win over Mako Thompson.
Cassidy, of Waikato, had been a warm favourite among the local hopes, but couldn't shake Shellback who was elated with her tense extra-hole win.
"So happy to have won on the 19th hole to make it through to the top eight," the former Cairns resident beamed on Twitter.
Dobbelaar, who pulled off a series of tense wins last year at Royal Wellington, was as many as six up in his match, but eased up on the inward nine before prevailing.
Earlier, in yesterday's stroke play phase, six Aussies advanced to the knockout phase.
West Australian state captain Georgia Shears was the other woman to progress, but she fell 2&1 to Rose Zheng in the Round of 32.
