Jager scorches Formby record

ROUND ONE RESULTS With assistance from the R&A AIS/Golf Australia National Squad member Matt Jager started his British Amateur Championship campaign in scintillating style with a 6-under par 66 at Formby Golf Club. Jager finished the day in second place going into the second and final qualifying round. Opening with a bogey, Jager fired consecutive birdies on the second and third holes before two more birdies on the seventh and eighth had him through the turn at 3-under par. The West Australian was solid through his back nine, closing with an eagle on the 17th to jump to 6-under for the day. He needed only two four irons to reach the green. I m delighted with the way I played, Jager said after setting a new course record. “I tried to avoid all the traps and just managed my game well. Fellow AIS/National Squad member Brendan Smith finished with a 2-under par 70 to be a tie for 16th and four shots behind Jager. Jason Scrivener (AIS/GA) and Bryden Macpherson (GA squad) shot opening 75s and will need to have solid second rounds to progress to the Match Play stages.
