JAGER WINS NEW ZEALAND AMATEUR

Current Srixon Australian Amateur champion Matt Jager became the first player since Lucas Parsons to win both the Australian and New Zealand Amateur championships in the same year today. The AIS/Golf Australia National Squad member successfully defended his Lion Foundation New Zealand Amateur Championship title with a 7&6 win over New Zealander Brad Kendall at Hastings Golf Club. Former professional golfer Parsons won in 1991 at Gisborne Golf Club to complete the double. The 21-year-old, from Melville Glades Golf Club in Perth, won the title at Titirangi Golf Club last year. It’s a pretty cool feeling, Jager said. It’s really nice to get to hold both the Australian Amateur and New Zealand Amateur trophies in the one year. Jager, who also won the this year s Srixon Australian Men’sStroke Play title in Perth, fired nine birdies en route to his victory on New Zealand s North Island. I flushed it this morning and managed to put my foot down at the right time, Jager said. I had a couple of chances to run away with it but missed a couple of putts I finished off with a birdie which was great. The last man to win back-to-back New Zealand Amateur titles was Auckland s Terry Pulman in 1976 and 1977. CLICK HERE TO SEE THE HOLE-BY-HOLE SCORES
