The Monash Cup and Joan Fisher Plate tournaments concluded today with young James Bannan (Rosanna) and even younger Kono Matsumoto (Victoria) triumphant over a strong field of Australian and International amateurs. The first 36 holes of these 72 hole stroke competitions were played at Huntingdale GC yesterday under favourable weather conditions. The final 36 holes were played today, again, under perfectly blue skies and a light breeze at the challenging Metropolitan GC layout.
After 54 holes, Bannan led the field by a mere shot over Kingston Heath member Richard Macafee. These two talented players fought it shot by shot over the last 18 holes with both players carding final rounds of 78 which was just enough for Bannan to maintain his advantage and claim the title.
In the meantime, the women’s field saw a rising star, Kono Matsumoto, performed at her best. Kono, at her tender age of 14 managed to win the tournament by 11 shots after scoring consistently with rounds of 71, 75, 75 & 76. Congratulations to this young talented player whose future looks brighter every day she steps on a golf course. Her nearest rival was Jo Charlton, a Metropolitan member, who has taken a spot in the State Team for the second year in a row. Charlton will be again the State Team Captain, a great honour for any Victorian player. Best of luck to Jo and the rest of the Victorian Team in the upcoming Interstate Series.
Special mention to the eight Singapore players who participated in the events, with four of them achieving Top 10 positions in the respective fields.
The Joan Fisher Plate and The Monash Cup results will count towards the 2014 Champions Trophy and Ivo Whitton averages.
