Jason Day withdraws from Australian Open

Jason Day's back injury has forced the world No.1 to withdraw from the Emirates Australian Open and World Cup of Golf this summer.

On the advice of his physician, the Queenslander this morning "has regretfully withdrawn" from both November tournaments.

Day has been advised to rest a back injury that plagued the end of his 2016 PGA TOUR season, including his withdrawal from the final two events of the US PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs.

“I regret that I will be unable to come home to Australia this year," Day said.

"I was looking forward to playing in the Australian Open and teaming up with Adam Scott on one of my favorite courses, Kingston Heath, the following week at the World Cup in Melbourne.

"My plan is to return home to Australia in 2017.

"My best wishes to all in Sydney at the Open and to Adam and Team Australia in Melbourne at the World Cup."

Golf Australia chief executive Stephen Pitt said he understood Day's reasoning and wished him a speedy recovery.

"Naturally we're disappointed not to get to see Jason at home this summer, but it's important for his career that he not risk further injury," Pitt said.

"We are always endeavouring to make the Emirates Australian Open field as strong as possible and we will redouble our efforts in coming weeks to bolster it again."

Day's management said the prognosis for a successful return to playing next season was not an issue, but the timing of the long trip to Australia during his rehabilitation.

"I appreciate the understanding and patience of my Australian fans," said Day, who has also been forced out of a charity match in Manila against Rory McIlroy after the World Cup.

"I’m quite saddened about missing our trip to the Philippines," he said.

"I was planning on taking my mum back to her home in the Philippines to visit where we lost members of our family in the (2013) typhoon.

"We are going to raise much needed funds for these worthy causes brought on by this disaster and I look forward to being there in 2017 to help get this work done."
