Jason’s Day out

Jason Day has completed his best ever result in a PGA event finishing in outright sixth position at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California. The Australian was in the mix right until the business end, carding a two-under par final round of 70 to finish at eight-under the card for the tournament, two shots adrift of the eventual winner American Steve Lowery. Day, who turned pro in 2006 and made the cut in 14 of 19 starts on the Nationwide Tour last year, completed an even-par opening nine holes before scoring birdies on the 10th and 13th holes to remain in contention. But a bogey on the par-five 14th cost him momentum heading down the final stretch. Lowery secured his first PGA title in eight years in a play-off against Vijay Singh after the Fijian threw away a three-shot lead late in the final round. The world No.11 endured a horror stretch down the back nine making three consecutive bogeys before recovering to birdie the final hole and force a play-off. But Lowery, who earlier came agonisingly close to sealing victory with a monster birdie putt on his final hole, held his nerve and claimed victory with a birdie on the first extra hole. The American trio of Corey Pavin, John Mallinger and Dudley Hart all finished in a tie for third at nine-under par. Andrew Buckle was the next best Australian in the field at three-under par while Matthew Goggin finished at one-under for the tournament.
