Jenny Lee wins Vesta Cup as SA Amateur 1st Qualifier

Jenny Lee from the Glenelg Golf Club has claimed the Vesta Cup as the leading qualifier after the stroke rounds of the South Australian Women’s Amateur Championship.

With an opening round 1-over 73 at Tea Tree Gully, Lee followed up with a 5-under 67, setting a new women’s course record for the East Course at The Grange Golf Club.

Lee finished on (140) placing her nine shots ahead of overnight leader Stephanie Bunque (Victoria GC) 72, 77 (149).

Lee had 2 birdies and 3 bogeys in round one and was one stroke off the lead.

“I hit it okay yesterday at Tea Tree Gully but couldn’t hold many putts, I had a three-putt on the last hole for 1-over.” Lee said.

“But today my putting was on fire, it was really good, I hit a couple of close ones too”.

Lee hit 15 greens in the second round of the strokeplay last year to finish leading qualifier and hit 14 greens again today, making 7 birdies in her 67.

“It’s the best I’ve scored in a while, it was really good. I felt like I had a couple under, but not 5 under”

Teeing off the 10th tee, Lee moved to 5-under on 6 with three holes to play.

“At 5-under I had two more par 5’s coming up, so I thought I could get another couple of birdies, but I made bogey on the 7th thinking about it.”

Lee made par on the 8th and managed to birdie the 9th for good measure.

“4-under was my best score before today so 5-under is great. I’m really happy to win the medal, but my aim is to win the Match Play and get the title.”

Lee lost on 20th in the Semi Final last year to the eventual winner Kono Matsumoto from Victoria, and was runner up on her previous two starts.

“If I play as I did today and play my own game I’m confident I can go one better this year.” Lee added.

Sophie Cusack (Bonnie Doon – NSW), finished 76, 75 (151) to qualify in third position behind Stephanie Bunque, while four players finished (+8) on 152. They were; Ella Adams (The Grange), Robyn Choi (RACV Royal Pines – QLD), Deedee-Taylah Russell (Emerald Lakes – QLD) and Ebony Heard (Goldfields – WA).

The eighth and final qualifier was Jo Flaherty (Commonwealth) at 10-over on 154.

The South Australian Women's Country Championship was played in conjunction with the SA Amateur and the Country Champion for 2015 is Deb Christie from Lameroo with rounds of 84,80 (164). Christie finished 15th

The South Australian Amateur Championship Match Play rounds (Quarter Finals) commence at Kooyonga on Thursday 1 October from 7.56am.
