Jones loses play-off

Australia&aposs Brendan Jones has been edged out by Takashi Kanemoto at the third play-off hole in the Mitsubishi Diamond Cup as the Japanese veteran claimed a first career title on Sunday at Oarai Golf Club. Kanemoto, 38, carded a final-round five-under-par 67 to join overnight leader Jones at the top of the leaderboard on five-under overall after the Australian signed for a 69. Jones, 34, had looked on course for a ninth Japan Tour crown after leading by three strokes with eight holes to play. But while he parred his way home, Kanemoto picked up birdies at 12, 15 and 16 to earn his place in the play-off. And after both players parred the first two extra holes, Kanemoto picked up a birdie at the third time of asking to claim the victory. Defending champion Prayad Marksaeng of Thailand finished two adrift in third after a final-round four-under-par 68, with Hiroshi Iwata (67), Taichi Teshima (67) and Kaname Yokoo (68) a further shot back tied for fourth. Kim Hung-tae (64) and Toru Taniguchi (69) were the only other players to finish under par, tied for seventh at one-under, with Satoru Hirota (68) and Tommy Nakajima (72) rounding out the top 10 at level-par overall. Earlier in the day, Australian Jason Day shot another impressive round to be right in contention heading into the final day of the Crowne Plaza Invitational in Texas. Chasing his maiden PGA Tour title, Day enjoyed a bogey-free five-under-par round of 65 to move up to 15-under overall and a tie for second place with Steve Marino and Steve Stricker. South African Tim Clark leads the trio by two strokes after firing a four-under-par 66 at the Colonial Country Club. Fijian Vijay Singh is also in the hunt at 13-under, with Justin Leonard and Woody Austin a further stroke back. John Senden is the next best Australian; he is tied for 18th at eight-under, while Nick O&aposHern and Geoff Ogilvy are in a share of 28th place at six-under. James Nitties and Rod Pampling are well back in 37th and 44th spot respectively and Adam Scott continues to struggle down in 59th place. New Zealand teenager Danny Lee had a disappointing one-over-par round to slip down to 53rd. And in London, Marcus Fraser shot an even-par 72 in his third round to be in a tie for sixth place, four shots off the lead at the European Open. Frenchman Christian Cevaer and Indian Jeev Milkha SIngh leads the tournament at nine-under, with 20-year-old Rory McIlroy, Alvaro Quiros and Chris Wood three shots back. Fraser, Soren Hansen, Gary Orr and Steve Webster are all at five-under-par heading into Sunday&aposs final round.
