Junior golf action heads to WA

/> Wanneroo Golf Club will be host to some of the best up and coming junior golfers in the country at the 2012 Smarter than Smoking Boys and Girls State Junior Championships on Sunday, 25th of November.

The Boys field will see 4 of the top 10 junior boys in Australia tee it up. Among them is local favourites Curtis Luck (Cottesloe Golf Club) and Jarryd Felton (Gosnells Golf Club).

Australian number 6 Luck has continued to emerge as one of the states promising young stars and will be looking to defend his State Junior Amateur title. After a successful 2011, he has had wins at the 2012 Srixon Junior Championship and the Newman & Brooks 54-hole Championship. Both Luck and Jarryd Felton were members of the 2012 Men’s and Boys State Teams. Felton is currently ranked as the number 4 junior in the country.

National Junior Squad members Ryan Ruffels and Lucas Herbert of Victoria are 8th and 9th respectively in National Junior Boys rankings. Ruffels was recently runner-up at the SINGHA Thailand Junior World Championships, and Herbert qualified as a member of Team Australia 2012 after finishing as one of the leading boys at the Aaron Baddeley World Junior Championship – Australian Final.

Another notable to watch for is Royal Fremantle’s Minwoo Lee who has been in hot form lately. Lee, the brother of emerging star Minjee Lee, has had a breakout couple of months recently which included a win at the Rockingham Junior Bowl and is currently playing off a Plus 1 handicap.

In the Girls Championship, reigning State Junior Champion Hannah Green of Mount Lawley Golf Club will be returning to defend her title.
Green has enjoyed a successful year which included wins at the Aaron Baddeley World Junior Championship – Australian Final and the Newman & Brooks 54-hole Championship. Hannah also represented Australia at the Trans-Tasman Cup where she was a member of the winning team. She was a member of the winning Women’s State team at the 2012 Interstate Series and is currently number 5 in National Junior Girls rankings.

Another familiar name contesting the Girls field is Victorian Montana Strauss. Strauss is presently number 7 in National Girls Rankings and is playing off a scratch handicap.

Both the Boys and Girls State Junior Championships will be played in conjunction with the Kay Lane Trophy, and the WA State Sub Junior Championships.
