This year a classy 239 players took to the field in the bid for the prized 2017 Sportscover Victorian Junior Masters title, and for the first time in the history of the event all 239 players competed in round 3 today. Played at the Waverley-Churchill Golf and Bowls Club in scorching conditions, it was a test of resilience for our future stars.
The in-form Alizza Hetherington (Royal Melbourne GC) focused yet casual in her approach, set Churchill Park on fire early birding her first three holes, stretching her commanding lead to four shots over Grace Kim from the Avondale GC. A double on 16, relinquished her advantage to two shots at the day’s end. Hetherington has her sights on her third major title in almost just as many appearances over the past 6 months.
Amongst the boys, the leaderboard yo-yoed on several occasions with class acts of local, interstate and international talent all sharing their moment on top of the table throughout the day’s play. A giant leap came from New South Welshman Joshua Gadd (Concord GC) jumping to 4th with a 68 off the stick. Gadd is a shy 4 shots behind clubhouse leader Zachary Maxwell (Virginia GC).
In the age group sections, Nathan Page (The National) sits dominatingly in first position and looks poised to take out back-to-back U14 titles, as does Singaporean Anne Fernandez in the U12 girls carding 78 today. Rose Zheng (Pakurunga GC) flew to the lead in the U16 girls section with an impressive 3-under par which included 6 birdies.
Spectators welcome (and encouraged!) to walk the fairways tomorrow. Play will commence with morning shotgun starts at both the Churchill Park and Waverley site, and our leading groups will grace Waverley’s fairways with victory in sight from 12.15pm.
