Junior Pennant Quarter-Final matches go down to the wire

With blusterous conditions greeting the players on the first tee and the dark clouds looming in the distance it was certainly a day that would test all players. Aside from the conditions all players were eager and looking forward to the challenge ahead and hoping that their success in the seasonal matches would hold them in good stead for the knock matches of the quarter finals.

The first matches to commence the day saw Kooringal up against Riversdale, and Heidelberg up against Metropolitan. Kooringal were quick out of the gates in their match against Riversdale with some early brilliance from both Cameron Taylor and Walter Sit Woon, both defeating their opponents 7/6. However Riversdale weren’t going to go away without a fight and at the completion of play had managed to level the result to three matches all. With everything all square the match needed to be decided with a sudden death playoff, and at the second playoff hole Alice Fan of Riversdale was able to clench the match with a wonderful birdie and a team roar that could be heard all the way back at the clubhouse. The Heidelberg and Metropolitan match looked good on paper with some low handicapped players and a good even match up with few shots having to be given. With most matches going down to the last few shots it was just about anyones game, however with a Bubba Watson like shot out of the tress and an off the green birdie at the last for Toby Walker of Heidelberg, things just fell the way of the Heidelberg team as they took out the match against Metropolitan.

In the other two matches of the day we saw Victoria up against Waverley, and Churchill Park up against The Heritage. Victoria entered the match against Waverley coming of a fantastic season winning all 5 home and away games. Waverley was also quieting confident after a very successful 2013 Junior Pennant season making it all the way to the finals. At the completion of the match Waverley proved too good on the day with a convincing win over Victoria. In the last match to be decided we again saw a match that needed extra holes to produce a result, with the number 2 match between Churchill Park’s Jordan Folino and The Heritage’s Cody Marx needing to go down the 19th hole after finishing all square after 18. With the match hanging in the balance a win from Cody would see the 2013 Junior Pennant Winners progress to the Semi-Finals and a potential shot at back to back titles. It took a touch of brilliance and finesse to produce what may have been the shot of the day, a 30 metre bunker shot to 2 feet and a tap in par to win the match.

Well done to all teams on making the Quarter-Finals and good luck to the 4 teams heading to the Semi-Final matches at Kew GC on Friday.
