MEN: Cool Murray wins SA Classic
18 year-old, Becky Kay from Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club in Queensland, has won the 2017 Rene Erichen Salver by three, finishing the 72 hole tournament 5-under.
Kay started the day at 4-under, two clear of Western Australian Kathryn Norris who started the day the better of the two, catching Kay by the seventh hole.
Back to back birdies on eight and nine to Kay and a dropped shot to Norris, suddenly extended Kay’s margin out to three at the turn, with Victorian Montana Strauss five back.
With Norris making six straight pars and Kay dropping a shot on 11 and two on 14, the players stood on the 16th tee both 3-under. Under pressure and with Norris solid as a rock, Kay produced the shot of the championship, making an ace on the 130mtr par 3, which propelled her two ahead in the blink of an eye, with two to play.
Kay comfortably closed out the championship with two pars, deservedly winning the Salver by three, finishing with rounds of 71, 73, 71, 72 (5-under).
“I am extremely excited, I’ve been playing well lately and had some good results and it’s good to have another win under my belt.” Kay said
“It’s my first win as an 18-year-old. My dad and my pop were here all this week. They support me so much, so I am very lucky to have them”.
“I absolutely love this course, it’s always in great condition, The Australian Open was here a month ago, you can’t really get a better course in Australia.” Kay added
WA 16-year-old Kathryn Norris was gallant in defeat to finish second with rounds of 70, 73, 74, 73 and at 2-under should be satisfied with her week.
Finishing third was Queenslander Karis Davidson who carded rounds of 73, 75, 75, 69 (even par).
Tied fourth were Gennai Goodwin (QLD) and Montana Strauss (VIC) at 2-over, with South Australian Ella Adams (The Grange GC) finishing sixth at 5-over for the tournament.
