Kay powers to March hat-trick

Becky Kay has completed a remarkable March, charging to the Bowra & O’Dea Women’s Classic title in Perth today to complete a stunning hat-trick.

The Queenslander not only won her second straight WA 72-hole stroke play title with a blistering final-round 67 at spectacular Cottesloe Golf Club, but she also pocketed her third national rankings title in as many weeks.

Kay, 19, of the Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club, roared away to extend her overnight lead from three strokes to a commanding final margin of seven.

After winning the Riversdale Cup in Melbourne and Rene Erichsen Salver in Adelaide, Kay went wire-to-wire in Perth, all but ensuring herself of a repeat shot at the Karrie Webb Series, the winners of which will be revealed in coming days.

Kay was all class on the final day, turning seven strokes ahead of nearest competitor Stephanie Bunque after four birdies and just one bogey on the front nine.

She duly rounded off a great week with four more birdies against two bogeys on the back nine for a tournament best five-under total left her square overall.

Bunque, who will partner Kay and the absent Grace Kim in representing Australia in May's Queen Sirikit Cup in Thailand, matched her Queensland rival on the back nine, at one point notching four consecutive birdies.

But the Victorian's run was too little too late, despite a fine 71, the second best round of the tournament.

Sydney's Doey Choi and Perth's Kirsten Rudgeley shared third finishing a further three shots back at 10 over in total.

A final-round 72 to Kathryn Norris saw three Western Australian competitors in the top six overall, with Maddison Hinson-Tolchard also enjoying the Cottesloe layout.

Janine Northrop earned a six-stroke victory in the 54-hole seniors event, ending with a final round 84.

Lisa Taylor was the winner of the mid-amateur event, with a round of 88 enough to see her gain the crown.
