Narrow fairways and slick, sloping greens proved to be challenging for the players today at Box Hill Golf Club for the State Final of the 2012 Silver Spoon. Each golf club held their own qualifying round, with the winner proceeding to the State Final.
Elaine Hrabar (Terang, Hcp 25) was the morning winner, with a score of 36 Stableford points, one point ahead of Medway’s Sue Heffernan (Hcp 13) on 35 points. It was only when the winner and runner-up were announced that an uncanny link was discovered between the pair. Elaine and Sue are actually old friends and first met when they gave birth to their respective children forty years ago in the Terang Hospital. They hadn’t seen each other in five years, and in fact only ever met on the golf course. This made for a delightful reunion.
The afternoon field had to face more adverse playing conditions, ranging from sunshine to sudden torrential downpour. Lisa Kent (Cerberus, Hcp 29) was not fazed at all, shining through with a stunning 43 points and taking home the Case of Spoons. Kent was steady on the front nine with 18 points and came in strong on the back with an impressive 25 points! Jo Mazzoletti (Long Island, Hcp 10) was the PM and overall runner-up for the day with 38 points.
The next Women’s event will be the Victorian Salver at Amstel (Ranfurlie), which is run concurrently with the qualifying rounds for the Champion of Champions on November 20 – 21.
