Kulacz and Arnold treading water in San Francisco

Australian pair Rick Kulacz and Jamie Arnold struggled early in the US Amateur, shooting five and seven-over respectively at The Olympic Club in San Francisco. But despite the relatively high scoring, the pair is only half-way back in the field and remain a good chance to qualify for the match play rounds should they produce some solid golf in the coming days. Kulacz started his opening round well, dropping just one shot through the opening nine holes. However three bogeys in four holes to begin the back nine put him under pressure. The West Australian limited the damage with three straight pars but another dropped shot on 17 forced him to settle for a five-over 75. Arnold posted a seven-over 77 but would have equalled his countryman if not for a double bogey on what is proving a very troublesome 17th hole for the Australian contingent. A large portion of the field failed to finish their rounds when dense fog forced the cancellation of play. American Jonathan Hodge leads the field outright at four-under, but he has only managed to complete nine holes thus far. Englishman Gary Wolstenholme is clear second at three-under, also through nine. Click here for comprehensive scoring
