Cool conditions greeted the 92 players who took to Spring Valley GC this morning for third city qualifying round of the 2016 Mazda Victorian Fourball Championship. The strong field of 31 men’s pairs, 6 women’s pairs & 9 mixed pairs enjoyed one of the Melbourne Sandbelt’s finest layouts, which was once again presented in immaculate condition.
Today’s mixed event saw the husband & wife duo of Stephen & Lee-Anne Day (Ballarat) & (Midlands) return a fine score of 44 points to emerge victorious. Fellow Midlands club members Gary & Jill Morrison finished runner-up falling just two points shy of the winning score with 42 points. Ian Frost (Bendigo) & Tristen Wearne (Heathcote) finished in third place with 41 points.
The results of the women’s event were of the highest quality, with the day’s two overall highest scores recorded. Hayley & Cassidy Peters (Spring Valley) & (Victoria) finished in third place with a very respectable score of 44 stableford points. In the runner-up position was Julia McCammon (The Heritage) & Susan Staddon (Riversdale) who produced a fine score of 46 points & could consider themselves a little unlucky not to take the top prize. The top honour for the women’s category went to Jan Kreymborg & Cecily Pezet (Spring Valley) who used all of their local knowledge to their advantage to produce the days highest overall score a sizzling 47 stableford points!
The men’s event saw a tight finish, with a countback needed to decide the winning pair after a tie at the top on 44 stableford points. The Keysborough & Heidelberg combination of Graham Voss & Chris DiMattina came out on top courtesy of a strong finish over the final nine holes which proved good enough to secure first place. Paul Goodear & Greg Fagan (Northern) finished in second place with third place taken out by Bill Holland & Bruce Stammers (Southern).
The next qualifying round will be held at Horsham GC on Sunday 17 January, followed by Kingston Heath GC on Tuesday 19 January.
