Latrobe Golf Club has won the 2018 Victorian Captains and Presidents Day held at the Southern Golf Club on Friday 30 November. First played in 1960, the 114th Captains and Presidents Day saw 107 players gather from 31 Melbourne clubs for lunch and golf.

Played annually during Spring, the day enables Melbourne club representatives to meet each other, both socially and competitively in pleasurable conditions.

On a glorious sunny late November afternoon, Latrobe represented by Captain Tim Stray and President Jeff Schofield won the Foster Trophy with an aggregate stableford total of 69 points. Melbourne Airport, represented by Ravin Narayan and Peter Cvitkovic, finished runners-up with 67 points.

Individual men’s and women’s honours were respectively won by Sandhurt’s Don Curtain with 37 points and Kingston Heath’s Michelle Otto with 42 points. Curtain won the men’s award on countback from Latrobe’s Jeff Schofield while Otto headed some great women’s scores with The Heritage’s Julie Merrigan finishing runner-up with 41 points.

As a new initiative for 2018, each club was also invited to be represented by up to four people, including the Club Captain, Club President and an additional two women who were either Club Committee/Board representatives or Women’s office bearers.

Golf Victoria strongly desires to encourage women from as many Melbourne clubs as possible to be involved with the day and interact with their counterparts on all the common golf issues, particularly the attraction and retention of players to club membership. Pleasingly over 50 women participated in today’s event.

The 2019 Victorian Captains and Presidents Day will be played at the Yarra Yarra Golf Club on Friday 8 November.
