Launceston wins back-to-back state pennant titles

Launceston Golf Club is again the toast of the North after winning back-to-back Tasmanian men’s pennant titles on Sunday.

The 36-hole contest at Kingston Beach Golf Club saw the boys from Kings Meadows defeat Tasmania 4-3 in a thrilling final which came down to the final hole.

Launceston started favourites and secured victories through Mitch Van Noord defeating Andrew Phillips 4&2, Brett Churchill overcoming Richard Kube 5&4 and Josh Molendyk beating Josh Spaulding 5&4.

However Tasmania fought back with Mark Schulze defeating Chris Sayer 6&5, Stuart Bonnitcha overcoming Matt Marston 6&5 and Craig Christie beating Cam Bell 2&1.

However it was Launceston’s Captain Greg Longmore who kept it together for the northerners at the completion of the 36-holes.

Longmore won the 33rd hole with a birdie to go 1up in his match with Nathan Gatehouse.

With the final all square at three contests a piece, the pair halved the remaining holes in par or better giving Launceston the State title.

Division two was captured by Tasmania with a 5-2 defeat of the northern premiers Riverside Golf Club.

For Tasmania, Mark Jacobson, Matthew Cross, Luke Gilbert, and father and son combination of Neil and Paul Faulks were all victorious.

For Riverside Ross Clark defeated Brad Conyers 3&2 while Josh New beat John Milbourne 2&1.

Launceston Golf Club won the remaining division three State pennant title with a hard fought 5-2 win over Tasmania.

Best for Launceston were David Hamilton, Nigel Donachie, Andrew Riddick and Steane Kremerskothen.

While Kale Thompson, Noel Dalwood and junior member Jonty Williams was the best for the defeated Tasmania team.
