Launceston wins fifth Claremont Shield

Launceston Golf Club’s Mitch Van Noord, Greg Longmore, Shayne Walker and Matt Marston fired to win a fifth Claremont Shield title last weekend.

The tournament was keenly contested at Launceston with one stroke separating Wynyard and Ulverstone Golf Clubs following Saturday afternoon’s foursomes round.

Craig Hancock and Jeremy Hubbard leading the way for the Wynyard Golf Club and combining for a one-under-par round of 71.

While Cameron Allen and Brayden Field fired for the Ulverstone Golf Club, shooting an even-par round of 72.

However, Launceston was too strong on Sunday in the singles event with two of the four team members figuring in the top ten on the final individual leader board.

Van Noord, the best performed of the quartet winning the 36-hole gross title and contributing to the team’s total with rounds of 69 and 70, a five-under-par total of 139.

Longmore and Marston rounded out the best three for the club with eight-over and ten-over-par respectively.

Wynyard Golf Club, the 2007 champions, were runners-up on the final leader board at 22-over-par.

Best for Wynyard Golf Club was Hancock who placed second on the final individual leader board on two-under-par after rounds of 71 and 71, a total of 142.

The Ulverstone Golf Club team of Allen, Field, Craig Mowat and Craig Walker placed third with Prospect Vale and Tasmania tying for equal fourth.

Wynyard Golf Club walked away with the Eric Bourke Memorial shield with a handicap total of 514½.
