Paul Lawrie cruised to a four-shot victory at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles to give Europe a boost ahead of the Ryder Cup. The Scot carded a four-under 68 on Sunday to complete the tournament at 16-under overall, well clear of Australian Brett Rumford, who also closed with a 68. The win could lift the 43-year-old into the world&aposs top 30 for the first time when the Official World Golf Rankings are updated on Monday, and will give him plenty of confidence for his second Ryder Cup appearance. Fredrik Andersson Hed was the day&aposs biggest mover, leaping 20 places up the leaderboard to finish in a tie for third after a closing seven-under 65. Dutchman Maarten Lafeber and Frenchman Romain Wattel joined the Swede on 11-under after rounds of 69 and 72 respectively. Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts needed a top-two finish to join Lawrie in the Ryder Cup team but could only manage a share of 19th and will now have to rely on a wildcard place. Colsaerts&apos loss was Martin Kaymer&aposs gain as the German was confirmed as the last of the 10 automatic qualifiers for the Europe team. Lawrie doubled his overnight lead after his playing partner Wattel bogeyed the first, and he was never headed from there to ease to a comfortable win. The Scot&aposs round was marked by his consistency, recording only one bogey and five birdies on his way to his second victory of the year, and his third career win in his home country. “I feel calmer in Scotland for some reason – it&aposs weird – and I play some of my best golf here too,” he said. Fellow Scots Stephen Gallacher, Colin Montgomerie and Richie Ramsay grabbed a share of sixth place alongside Italian Francesco Molinari at 10-under, while Denmark&aposs Thomas Bjorn, Spaniard Rafa Cabrera-Bello, Englishman Paul Waring and local Peter Whiteford finished a shot further back.
