Lee and Nisbet crowned champions in QLD

courtesy: Golf Queensland Daniel Nisbet and Justine Lee have won the 2009 Queensland Amateur titles at Brisbane s Nudgee Golf Club this afternoon. In what proved to be two absorbing matches, Nisbet defeated Cameron Smith 4 & 2 and Lee defeated Whitney Hillier 2 & 1. In fine sunny morning conditions, it was Nisbet who asserted his dominance early in the Men’sfinal, jumping out to a 6-hole lead after 10 holes following an incredible sequence of six birdies in seven holes from the forth. Not to be outdone, 15-year-old Smith, who was vying to be the youngest champion in the championship s history, pulled back two holes on the back nine to lie four holes down after the first 18. Despite registering five birdies in the first fourteen holes of the second round, Smith was unable to make further inroads into Nisbet s lead, with holding a four-hole lead on the 33rd tee. It was Smith who had the satisfaction of recording the shot of the day however, holing a 70-metre approach shot for an eagle-two on the short par four 15th hole to unexpectedly extend the match down the 34th. Nisbet s approach to 8-feet at the 16th green set up birdie and the title 4&2. In the Women’s final, recently crowned Australian Amateur champion Justine Lee held the match lead throughout against Western Australian Whitney Hillier, jumping to a 5-hole lead after 10-holes and holding a four hole ascendency after the first 18. Hillier didn t surrender the match easily however, pegging Lee s lead back to a single hole by the 22nd. Birdies on both of Nudgee s long back-nine par fives restored Lee s lead to four and she was able to close out the match with solid pars on holes 34 and 35 to take the match 2&1. Just over 300 players registered for the Queensland Men’sand Women’s Amateur title ahead of last week s qualifying event, the Queensland Stroke Play Championship. Interestingly enough it was four of the youngest players in Smith (15), Nisbet (18), Hillier (18) and Lee (17) who fought out today s match-play finals. The second of Queensland s Australian Amateur ranking events, the Keperra Bowl, starts at Brisbane s Keperra Golf Club from next Tuesday.
