Minjee Lee has herself well in contention after the first round of the final women’s major championship of the year, the Evian Championship.
The Golf Australia rookie pro fired five birdies and two bogeys en route to a three-under-par 68 that left her tied sixth and just two shots behind joint leaders Lexi Thompson and Mi Hyang Lee.
On a good day for Australia at spectacular Evian Les Bains, France, former world No.1 Karrie Webb signed for an even-par 71 after being a couple over early in her round.
One stroke further back are Victoria’s Su Oh and Rebecca Artis, of New South Wales, who are part of a large and talented group tied for 40th after firing 72s.
On the wrong side of the projected cut line are Sarah Kemp (77) and Sarah-Jane Smith (78).
Lee, of Perth, finished T16 as an amateur at Evian last year and has already put herself in contention in two previous majors this season, her first full year as a professional.
The world No.15 was 13th in the LPGA Championship, then finished T9 at Turnberry after being right in the mix early in the final round of the Women’s British Open in early August.
