Lee Takes the Kids Out for MyGolf Shootout

Lee Harrington, ALPG member and Development Officer for Golf Queensland recently organised a MyGolf Shootout, the first of its kind in Queensland at The Southport Preparatory School Oval.

The MyGolf shootout was an initiative of Golf Queensland and Harrington was the main drive behind the event.

24 MyGolf participants from various MyGolf Centres took part in the shootout, which covers 4 basic skills in MyGolf – Rip It, Roll It, Fly It and Chip It.

"This event is the first of many MyGolf Shootout days to further encourage MyGolf Centres and its coordinators/coaches to work together to bring the MyGolf participants to learn and complete their MyGolf Skills Assessment Chart" Harrington said.

The participants were divided into 4 groups and each group were allocated time in each MyGolf Skill Station under the guidance of 5 teaching professionals from MyGolf Centres in the area.

The 5 teaching professionals that took part in the event were Rachel Hetherington and Neil Ulmer (Rachel Hetherington Driving Range), Grant Garrison (Golf Queensland), Scott Priest (Palm Meadows Golf Course) and Joel Merceica from KDV Sport Academy of Golf based in Carrara Gardens Golf Course.

Participants received tuition from the professionals and played various games in each station before being assessed in their MyGolf Skills Assessment Chart.

James Gibbolini from the Queensland State Squad was also present at the start of the day and did a half an hour demonstration of trick shots and shot making with the MyGolf participants.

"It was fantastic to see James here and the kids are amazed by his shot making and hopefully they will be inspired to work up to the elite level" Harrington added.

Rachel Hetherington, another member of ALPG was also thrilled to be involved in the MyGolf shootout. Hetherington, a former LPGA player with 8 wins on the tour recently opened her own golf academy and driving range near Cobaki Lakes, New South Wales.

"It is  great to be involved in grass roots and junior golf and to also see the enjoyment of young kids in the game" Hetherington said.

Every MyGolf participant was given a giftpack, shirt and hat for their involvement in the event.

Mission Foods was a generous sponsor on the day and supplied healthy snacks and lunch for the MyGolf participants.

MyGolf is Australia&aposs national junior golf program for kids between the ages 8 – 16. The program consists of MyGolf schools component, MyGolf Centres and the MyGolf Skills Assessment.
