Lee, Watt headline WA Amateur titles

The world&aposs best are on show in Fremantle this week as Brady Watt and Minjee Lee, the respective men’s and women’s world No. 2 and No. 3 ranked amateurs are back on home soil to contest the Men’sand Women’s State Amateur Championships being held at Royal Fremantle Golf Club. National Squad member Lee, at the tender age of sixteen, has captured all before her in a meteoric rise towards the top of world amateur golf. After claiming her most prestigious title yet, the 2012 US Girls Amateur title, Lee s year was honored with the 2012 Western Australian Junior Sports Star of the Year award. Since then she has not slowed down winning her first Australian Amateur title in January. Lee will not have it all her own way with stern competition sure to come from Mandurah s current world No. 15 Hayley Bettencourt and the highly talented Hannah Green from Mount Lawley. After a dominant 10 months which has included capturing titles in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Africa. Brady Watt is back in Perth vying to secure one of the few titles that has previously eluded him. Twelve months ago Watt was defeated in the final when Royal Fremantle s Oliver Goss holed a 10m putt on the last hole of the thirty six hole final to win 1up. One year later, Watt will be favourite to go one better with Goss unable to defend his title due to study commitments in the US. One of Watt s main challengers will be New South Welshman and fellow National Squad member Ricky Kato who will be looking to add to his lone national ranking event victory at the 2012 Tasmanian Amateur Open. Spectators are urged to come to Royal Fremantle Golf Club to check out the action as this maybe one of the last chances to see Watt and Lee before embarking on busy international schedules. Both Men’sand Women’s Championships will be played over 36 holes qualifying, with the top 16 qualifiers moving onto the match play section. Both finals will be contested over 36 holes on Sunday, March 17 starting at 8.30 am.
