Leishman into WGC top 16

Australia’s Marc Leishman is into the top 16 at the World Golf Championship Dell Matchplay in Texas after a dramatic three-man playoff today.

Leishman won his third round-robin match in a walkover against Jason Day, who has withdrawn, but needed Lee Westwood to beat Pat Perez of the United States to get into the playoff, which duly occurred.

It left Leishman, Westwood and Perez tied on two wins and heading down the first hole in a playoff.

The Australian, who last weekend won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida, lipped out with a birdie putt at the first playoff hole that would have given him the win.

But at the second, he made birdie to reach the next round.

He will play American Phil Mickelson in the next round in Austin, Texas.

Leishman, whose win last week was his first in America since 2012, is the last Australian remaining in the $US9.7 million event.
