Marc Leishman momentarily threatened to win his first tournament of the new US Tour season today before being overrun in the Safeway Classic, but he is back to his best.
Leishman closed with a 65 at Silverado resort in California and was the clubhouse leader for some time at 14-under before Canadian Adam Hadwin posted 16-under and ultimately long-hitting American Cameron Champ birdied the 72nd hole to win outright at 17-under.
Champ had led comfortably for most of the day but finally had to make a putt from a metre at the last to win his second tour title. Leishman slipped down to third place.
The other big winner from an Australian point of view was veteran Cameron Percy, the Victorian who has played himself back on to the main tour.
Percy followed up his T11 last week with a tied-seventh position to pick up more than $US200,000 in prizemoney.
Moreover 45-year-old Percy has earned enough and picked up enough Fedex Cup points to give himself a great chance of retaining his card for next season, just three events into the new year.
