Lewis clinches British Open title

American Stacy Lewis claimed a two-shot victory at the women&aposs British Open at St Andrews on Sunday. Lewis, who finished with an overall score of eight under par, edged South Korean pair Hee Young Park and Na Yeon Choi for her triumph in the major. Norwegian Suzann Pettersen and American Morgan Pressel were locked in a tie for fourth, three shots off the pace in Scotland. Heavy winds made conditions difficult on Saturday, and as a result, an early suspension of play saw competitors having to complete their third and fourth rounds on the final day. Lewis hit five birdies and five bogeys in her final round, with an even-par 72 enough to give her the second LPGA major of her career. “It&aposs unbelievable, it all happened so fast at the end,” Lewis told BBC Sport. “You are fighting so hard for every shot but then suddenly you have a couple of bogies and it&aposs all over.” Lewis who led the tournament with three holes remaining in the third round only to concede it after two late bogeys birdied the final two holes of her last round. Pressel, who held the lead heading into the final round, struggled under the pressure and finished with a four-over 76. The 25-year-old had also led the tournament on Thursday after an opening-day 66, before Choi hit the lead on Friday thanks to successive scores of 67 in the first two rounds. Both Park and Choi shot 73 in the last round though, while Pettersen hit a two-over 74. American Lizette Salas finished sixth, five shots off the pace, while a further stroke adrift were Japanese duo Mamiko Higa and Miki Saiki. American pair Natalie Gulbis and Nicole Castrale both shot overall scores of one under, rounding out the top 10.
