Frank Lickliter will take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the US Bank Championship over Australian Greg Chalmers after storming into contention with a seven-under-par 63 in Milwaukee on Saturday. American Lickliter started the day at Brown Deer Park in a tie for 14th at four under par and made a big impression as he moved into the lead at 11 under. That gave Lickliter the narrowest of advantages over halfway leader Chalmers heading into the final round but his advantage could have been bigger had he made a better job at the par-five final hole, which he three-putted from 47 feet for par. Despite his fine round, Lickliter came off the course disappointed with his closing effort as he went in search of a career-best round of 61. “That would have been my low round on tour if I had made that putt,” Lickliter said of his missed eagle attempt, which he rolled seven feet past the hole and then missed coming back for birdie. “All I was thinking about was making that putt and it was a poor effort.” Lickliter, 40 on July 28, had plenty of positive takes from a round of eight birdies and one bogey as he moved closer to a first PGA Tour win since 2003 after struggling with form and changing his swing in the last couple of years. “It&aposs a combination of a lot of things but part of it just having fun,” he said. “I&aposm enjoying hitting good golf shots, enjoying focusing and enjoying making birdies.” Overnight leader Chalmers had made a positive start to his bid for a first PGA Tour title in 220 starts. A three-under-par, second-round 67 gave the 35-year-old Australian a two-stroke lead at nine under at the halfway stage of the tournament, with Americans Kris Blanks, Jeff Klauk and Chris Riley on seven under in a tie for second place. Left-hander Chalmers opened with a birdie to move to 10 under for the week, but fell away with a bogey at the par-four fourth before bouncing back to join Lickliter with a birdie at the par-five sixth. Chalmers had a mid-round wobble with bogeys at the seventh and 10th holes before getting back on track with birdies at the 14th and 15th on the way to a 69, 10 under for the tournament. Jeff Maggert (66) and Riley (68) were tied for third at nine under, with Zimbabwe&aposs Brendon de Jonge (66) and Americans John Mallinger (66), Jeff Quinney (67) and Jeff Klauk (69) tied for fifth at eight under and Wisconsin native Jerry Kelly in a group at seven under, four shots off the lead. Of the three Europeans in the field, Mathias Gronberg performed the best on Saturday with a round of 66 to move to four under for the tournament.
