Lindberg Leads in Toledo Classic

rnPernilla Lindberg posted an opening round of seven-under-par 64 to sit atop of the leaderboard at the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic Presented by Kroger, Owens-Corning and O-I being played in Sylvania, Ohio.

Putting was the key for the likable Swede, who carded eight birdies and one bogey and only needed 27 putts on the Highlands Meadows Golf Club layout .

rn

“I had a great day on the greens,” said Lindberg. “It was really my putting that was the key today. I obviously put myself in good positions to make those putts. But it felt like every putt I hit all day had a chance to go in. So even the pars I made out there, they were still good birdie chances.”

Lindberg’s confidence has steadily begin to rise and it continued last week after a tied for fourth finish at the Ladies Irish Open on the Ladies European Tour (LET).

rn

I feel like I&aposve been working pretty hard on my game for the last couple of months,” said Lindberg. “In June, I felt that my game was going in the right direction, but I didn&apost get the scores out. Then over Evian, especially the Irish Open last week, I felt more and more confident and the things that I&aposve been working on are finally showing on the course. So it felt like I had some momentum coming into this week.”

In search of her first career LPGA Tour victory, Lindberg heads in to tomorrow’s second round with a two-stroke lead over Thailand’s Numa Gulyanamitta, France’s Karine Icher, South Korean Chella Choi, Americans Angela Stanford and Meredyth Duncan and Japan’s Mika Miyazato.

rn

Another six players are at four-under-par including South Koreans Amy Yang and So Yeon Ryu.

rn

Of the Australians, Lindsey Wright is the best placed.  She posted a two-under-par 69 to be tied for 31st position.  Sarah-Jane Smith is at even par and shares 72nd position, while Katherine Hull is a further shot back and tied for 90th.  Michelle Ellis is at three-over and tied for 119th, while Sarah Kemp had a disappointing six-over to be tied for 136th position.

rn

The defending champion this week is South Korean Na Yeon Choi, she posted 70 to be tied for 55th position.
