A star studded field of Tasmanian team members will lead the challenges of their respective area associations and regions this weekend. Greens Beach and Exeter Golf Clubs will host the 2013 James Boag Thyne Trophy and North vs South Plate. The Thyne Trophy is a round robin match-play tournament for men with each of Tasmania s four Area Associations represented. While the annual women’s North vs South Plate will see the two regions battle it out in foursomes and singles match-play. Each team in the Thyne Trophy competition is comprised of eight members, however, a contest between two teams is determined by seven singles matches. Favourites to take out this year s Thyne Trophy at Greens Beach are the boys from the Southern Metropolitan Association skippered by Tasmania Golf Club’s Mark Schulze. Schulze s squad this year includes the likes of Nathan Gatehouse of Kingston Beach and Tasmania Golf Club’s in-form competitors Andrew Phillips and Richard Kube. Golf Tasmania North is expected to perform strongly and will be captained by Mowbray golfer John Cassidy. The Northern line-up includes former touring professional Greg Longmore and last year s Tasmanian Amateur runner-up Cameron Bell, both from Launceston Golf Club. They will be attempting to reclaim the title last won by the North in 2005 at Seabrook Golf Club. Golf North West boasts a talented side led by Penguin Golf Club’s Vic Jamieson and Manager Craig Clark. Youngsters Mitchell Clark and Lewis Hood from the Smithton Golf Club are both expected to perform well based on current form. Players from the Southern Country Association include Drew Roberts from Llanherne and former State Colts Captain Dijon Barrett from the Elderslie Golf Club. The Southern Country Golf Association has been taking part in the competition since the event was modified in 1999 and claimed its first victory last year jointly with the Southern Metropolitan Association. The North versus South Plate will be a keenly contested event with the likes of Tammy Hall of Launceston and Jacqui Baker-Stubbs from Penguin representing the North. Jane Hyland of Kingston Beach and Royal Hobart Golf Club’s Anne Medlycott and Karen Bannister will be out to retain the plate when the competition tees off at Exeter. Teams from the North and South compete for The Plate which bares one of Keryn Henry clubs and was created in honour of her achievements. Henry represented Tasmania for 15 years between 1974 and 1994 and along with Anne Medlycott (nee Davie) are the only Tasmanians to win the Australian Women’s Foursomes Championship (1974). Henry s most successful year would be 1978 when she won the Southern and Tasmanian women’s championships. Henry was selected to represent Australia in the Tasman Cup (vs New Zealand) and remained undefeated in her two matches. Henry also shared victory in the New Zealand Women’s Stroke Play Championship. The James Boag Thyne Trophy and North vs South events will be played on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 April.
