LPGA – OH SO GOOD AT SYBASE

(18 May 2009 – Clifton, New Jersey)

South Koreas Ji Young Oh won her second LPGA tournament with a four shot victory at the Sybase Classic Presented by Shoprite on Sunday. Rounds of 66, 69, 69 and 70 saw her finish at 14-under par total 274 with Norway&aposs Suzann Pettersen in outright second place at 10-under par total 278. Michelle Wie and Paula Creamer finished in a tie for 3rd a further two shots back on 8-under par.

rnAt the start of the day Oh and Pettersen held a one shot lead over this year’s Kraft Nabisco champion Brittany Lincicome with Wie and Creamer sitting three shots shy of the lead. It was shaping up as a classic battle between the five. However, Lincicome was quickly going backwards with four bogies on the front nine to fall out of contention. Creamer and Wie never mounted a challenge, both finishing 1-over rounds of 73.

rnOn a very difficult final day weather-wise, the players struggled from the outset with Pettersen making bogey at her opening two holes. Both Oh and Pettersen then distanced themselves from the field, with Oh making birdies at the 3rd, 5th and 7th holes, while Pettersen made a trio of 1-unders from the 5th. Oh eventually made the turn with a one shot advantage which was quickly erased with a bogey on the 10th to move into the last 8 holes all tied.
rn
rnFrom there, it was Oh who continued the steady play with pars all the way in before a birdie to finish. Pettersen struggled late in her round with bogeys at the 12th, 17th and 18th holes to really not mount a significant challenge on the home stretch.
rn
rnOh started the tournament with an eagle two at her 11th hole followed by a hole-in-one on her 17th (the 8th). After receiving her US$300,000.00 winner’s cheque she said, “From the first day when I made a hole in one, I knew that the trophy was waiting for me and I needed to do everything in my power to win this tournament. I really wanted it badly and there was no way I wasn’t going to get it.”
rn
rnKarrie Webb and Katherine Hull were the best placed ALPG Members, finishing in a tie for 23rd at even par total 288.  Wendy Doolan (T37) and Sarah Kemp (T65) were the only other Members to make the cut.
rn
rnThis week, the players stay in New York for the final edition (after 30 years) of the US$1.5million LPGA Corning Classic. The ALPG contingent will be led by Katherine Hull and Lindsey Wright. They will be joined by Wendy Doolan, Michelle Ellis, Rachel Hetherington, Sarah Kemp and Sarah-Jane Smith.
