Lydia Ko wins U.S. Womens Amateur

Australian Women&aposs Amateur winner, Lydia Ko, has added to her already stunning list of titles by winning the US Women’s Amateur Championship at the Country Club in Cleveland in Ohio. Coming four years after fellow New Zealander Danny Lee s victory at the US Amateur Championship it provides a unique and impressive double for New Zealand golf, Lee just 18 years of age when he won the most significant title in men’s amateur golf. Both golfers were born in Korea and moved to New Zealand early in their lives. Lee is now playing the PGA Tour. Both players won professional events in their amateur careers, Lee winning the European Tour s Johnnie Walker Classic in Perth in 2009 and Ko winning the ALPG s NSW Women’s Open Championship in Sydney earlier this year. Ko defeated Floridian Jaye Marie Green 3&1 in today s final after taking an early lead with a birdie at the second hole of their scheduled 36 hole final. Although Green fought back to square the match on two occasions through the opening 18 holes, Ko went to lunch with a one hole advantage. The match remained that way until three consecutive birdies from the 6th hole of the afternoon round swept Ko to a 4 up lead and although Green reduced the deficit to two through 34 holes her task was just too great. A par at the 35th hole was good enough for Ko to win the hole and the match 3&1.
