MacManus soaks up Master of the Amateurs win

Queensland&aposs Tarquin MacManus has stormed home to win the 2011 Australian Master of the Amateurs at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club. The 21 year old from Cairns finished the four rounds on 276 at 12 under par. It is a record for the 14 years of this event. The previous best total was set by another young Queenslander – PGA Tour player Jason Day. MacManus too has been honing his golfing skills in the United States. He is part of the successsful golfing program at the University of Arizona and will complete his studies in six months. He has previously been a member of the Golf Australia National Squad. Today&aposs win is his biggest on home soil and coincided with the inaugural year that the tournament was recognised with official National Ranking Event status. MacManus&aposs father, who introduced Tarquin to the game as a three or four year old was his caddie for the four days at Royal Melbourne and his mother followed them around the course.”That”, McManus said “made today&aposs win even more special”. MacManus sealed the title with his last shot of the tournament – a 20 metre putt from the edge of the green that didn&apost look like missing. That gave him 65, the best round on a day which had gone from heavy rain and a four hour delay to the start of play to bright sunshine by the time his last putt dropped in on the 18th hole. He started the day three shots behind the leaders and after a bogey at the sixth, things weren&apost looking too good. But he steadied with five birdies in the back nine and brought it home with that monster putt. Tasmanian Ryan McCarthy, Ryan Fox from New Zealand and Andrew Sullivan from England all finished three shots behind the winner.
