Major chance for bunch of Aussies

Minjee Lee has already had a great year, climbing to No. 6 in the world. But the brilliant, young Australian player has one last opportunity to ice the season with a major when the Evian Championship starts at Evian-les-Bains in France tonight.

Royal Fremantle’s Lee, 22, is one of six Australians in the field for the fifth major of the women’s season.

She has contended in majors before, but her best result remains the tied-third finish she managed in California at last year’s ANA Inspiration. She also has a T9 result in this year’s Women’s British Open to go with her four victories on the LPGA Tour in as many seasons.

The Western Australian comes in in great form, having top 10 finishes in four of her last five tournaments to draw upon.

Su Oh, the Victorian who teamed with Lee to win a women’s world teams championship a few years ago, is the other Australian in the field who looks most likely to contend. Oh, also 22, has found her best in the latter part of the season in America with four top-10s that have seen her world ranking climb into the 60s.

Sarah Kemp, Sarah Jane Smith, Katherine Kirk and Hannah Green also will have high hopes this week.

The tournament will be telecast on Fox Sports.
