Sporting clubs came into focus recently as part of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. The Royal Commission is investigating how institutions such as schools, churches, sports clubs (yes, sports clubs!) and government organisations have responded to allegations and instances of child sexual abuse.
The hearing, in early to mid-April, highlighted how clubs should not ignore the importance of putting steps in place to ensure a safe environment for children.
Your club may have a number of policies in place. Many clubs have taken the steps of implementing a full member protection policy. A member protection policy outlines how your club meets its obligations to provide a safe environment and to maintain responsible behaviour and fair decision making.
To do this:
1. Visit: clubsupport.golf.org.au/policies-and-procedures
2. Download the Member Protection Policy doc.
3. Amend details in to suit your club. You may choose to add your own club logo.
4. Have the document reviewed and approved by your club board
5. Include it in your club rules or by-laws
6. Make the policy known to all staff
7. Make the policy known to members in your newsletter and visible to members on the club’s website. In particular, inform parents of children at your club and members when joining your club.
