Players were reprieved from yesterday’s blisteringly cold and windy conditions with relatively calm weather this afternoon at Woodlands Golf Club. The renowned Melbourne Sandbelt course tested all aspects of the 108 strong field, especially their shot-making ability with the small elevated greens and narrow fairways.
Mikihisa Matsumoto used all of his local knowledge and managed his way around the tricky layout best, returning a fine score of one under-par 71 to record the best score of the day. Matsumoto also recorded a victory in this same event last year when he notched out Andre Lautee on a countback.
Settlers Run’s Harrison Whykes wasn’t far behind today, finishing only two shots behind the Woodlands member and todays overall winner.
Matsumoto also signed for the best score in division A with a nett score of two under 70 from his 1 handicap. Meanwhile Heritage’s Montana Lewis claimed the top honours in the B division with a fantastic score of 70 (-4) to finish three shots clear of Maylling Jang.
A massive 46 stableford points by Imogen Jones from was more than good enough to earn top place in C division and the prestigious Liz Bruton salver. Harrison Weaver took home the Perc Morling trophy with a fine round of 42 points.
The highlight of the day came when Joshua Lee holed out on the 154m 17th for his first hole in one. What made the shot even better was the fact that his ace earned him a massive 6 stableford points on that hole alone!
The Regional Series will conclude at Sandhurst on Sunday 23 August where we will crown our divisional winners as well as the overall champion who will receive a paid trip to the “Jack Newton Srixon International” as a Golf Victoria representative in September.
