Matsumoto wins in difficult conditions

Kono Matsumoto (Victoria) has won the 2014 Spring Country Tournament in what were tough fresh conditions. Kono fired rounds of 75 & 78 at Portsea & Sorrento Golf Club respectively to win by one. Coming from two shots behind after round one, Kono shot an impressive 78 in what was a mentally challenging day. A birdie on the difficult 10th was a great start to Kono’s back nine. However, a birdie on the 17th by Joanna Flaherty (Port Fairy) put the pressure on the youngster going into the final hole. A pair of bogeys down the last was good enough for the Ruby McKenzie (Gross) Trophy to fall in the hands of Kono.

Runner up Joanna Flaherty had the round of the tournament with an impressive 73 on day one. Joanna is no stranger to the windy wet weather as her home course of Port Fairy is renowned for difficult golfing weather. This round also included six birdies.

Suzy Phillips-Limon from Shepparton was overjoyed after winning the Vi Teesdale (Nett) Trophy with her two rounds of 73 & 74 nett for a 147 total. Suzy won by three shots from a five way countback on 150. Karen Jenkins (Warrnambool) was the lucky one claiming the runner up position.

36 hole gross grade winners were as follows: Suzanne Burns (Box Hill B Grade), Karen Jenkins (Warrnambool C Grade), Suzanne Hurley (Sorrento D Grade).

The 36 hole nett grade winners were as follows: Victoria Bartlett- Bragg (Royal Melbourne A Grade), Cheryl Houben (The National B Grade), Jo-Ann Seadon (Churchill Park C Grade).

Over 300 women across the state came together down on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula for the annual Spring Country Tournament. A & C Grades played Portsea on Monday and Sorrento today, with B & D grades doing the reverse. The incredibly well participated event is one of the most popular on the calendar.

Next year, Wangaratta & Jubille will host on Tuesday 6- Wednesday 7 October 2015.
