Mav charges to Bangladesh lead

Queenslander Maverick Antcliff made a near-perfect start to his first career start in Bangladesh overnight.

Antcliff, 25, fired a bogey-free eight-under-par 63 to lead the Bangabandhu Cup Golf Open in Dhaka after round one.

The Augusta University graduate, who had missed the cut in his two previous Asian Tour starts this season, was superb despite hitting only 10 fairways to take a two-shot lead over local hope Mohammad Muaj, Taiwan's Wang Weilun, and Thai trio Jazz Janewattananond, Settee Prakongvech and Sadom Kaewkanjana.

Antcliff, who flew under the radar to tie for 13th at the Australian Open in November, said he'd done a good job of "staying in the present" as his round blossomed.

"I am really happy with the way I played today," the Brisbane golfer said.

"I wanted to come and play here last year but couldn’t get my visa approved in time, (so) it’s nice to be here finally.

"I have been working hard on my game after my first few events back home, (so) it’s nice to get off to a nice start.

"I am really happy with my birdie on the third hole … as I managed to get some momentum going from there."
