A strong field of 72 players ventured out this morning under clear skies at Trafalgar GC for the ninth country qualifying round of the 2016 Mazda Victorian Fourball Championship. Known as West Gippsland’s ‘hidden gem’, the undulating tree lined layout winds its way across the foothills of the Baw Baw ranges ensuring plenty of elevation change which proved challenging for the majority of the field.
Today’s mixed category saw Pakenham’s John Hoare & Tambo Valley’s Tina Cowie produce the second highest overall score of the day, a fine score of 44 stableford points to take the top mixed prize. Colin Sleep (Commonwealth) & Beate Lackman (The Dunes) finished runner-up with 40 points.
The women’s component of today’s event was taken out by the Warragul pair of Sue Rose & Kerri Ahearn who fired a solid round of 43 points. Trafalgar local Cheryl Deppelere & Drouin’s Kay Feaver finished in second place with 41 points.
The men’s event was another tight affair. The Sale duo of Andrew Heatherington & Greg Thomson returned the day’s best overall score a classy 45 points to take top honours by one point. Bruce Robinson (Corowa) & Keith Hems (Portsea) finished runner-up just one point shy with a score of 44 points.
At Neangar Park, another strong field of 84 players assembled for the first qualifying round to be held at the Central Victorian venue.
The mixed event saw Richard Hogg & Ros Gray (Yarrawonga Mulwala) finish atop the leaderboard with 43 points to win on a countback from Ken & Carol Bailey (Corowa). The women's event was taken out by Wendy Lake (Barham) & Neangar Park local Katrina McNaughton with 39 points.
The men's event saw an incredible score of 49 points returned by Neangar Park locals Sam Baker & James Fox with the Belvoir Park duo of Paul Schajermann & Travis Austerberry finishing runner-up with 46 points.
The next qualifying rounds will be held at Ballarat & Warrnambool GC’s on Sunday 21 February.
