The 2017 Mazda Victorian Four-Ball Championship State Final commenced in pleasant conditions for golf today at Sorrento Golf Club. The men’s field teed off at 7:45am and were greeted with a still morning that provided an opportunity for some big scores.

Plenty of pairs took advantage of the fine playing weather as 20 pairs recorded a score of 45 points or more. Understandably, many players were surprised to see themselves so far down the leaderboard after shooting such promising scores. Mark Krusic and Chris Hudson (Sale Golf Club) currently lead the field with a whopping 53 points, ahead of Samuel and Denver Artz (Warrnambool Golf Club) who finished with 50. Samuel Artz had a day out on the course and almost took home a car after hitting the flagstick on the hole-in-one 15th hole.

Despite the forecast for heavy rain and potential thunderstorms in the afternoon, the mixed and women’s fields escaped with only some minor drizzle throughout the round. They’ll be hoping this luck continues tomorrow morning with heavy rain forecasted for their second round of play at The National Golf Club.

In the mixed event, Nigel and Kim Ingram (Mildura GC) share the round 1 lead with Ruth and Michael Tenace (RACV) on 46 points. There are many pairs trailing close behind who all remain a strong chance to claim first prize and a tight finish will be expected tomorrow. In the women’s event, Cecily Pezet and Jan Kreymborg (Spring Valley GC) have blown the field away with a score of 50 points. They lead Wendy Ji (Eastern GC) and Tina Kim (Riversdale GC) by 6 points who finished with a very strong score of 44 points.

For the second and final round tomorrow, play will be taken to the ocean course at The National Golf Club. The mixed and women’s fields will tee off at 7:45am and the men’s field will tee off at 1:00pm.
