Located in South Australia, McCormack s Junior Golf Club is named after PGA Professional and former Development Officer and State Coach, Nick McCormack. A MYGolf Centre since October 2011, McCormack s now have 45 registered participants who attend sessions twice a month at Adelaide Shores. The participants are split into three groups; Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. Each group has one and a quarter hours coaching followed by 18, 9 or 5 holes on the par 3 and 4 course. The following questions have been answered by Centre Coordinator and Coach, Jan Douglass. Why do you run a junior program? The club has been in operation for more than 10 years after Nick identified the need for a club where kids could learn to play golf in a fun and safe environment before they decided to join a golf club. We decided to join our McCormack juniors into the MYGolf program in order to show them the importance of gaining the skills. Who runs the program? Nick and I (Jan) do the coaching. I did the Level 2 course in Melbourne when I worked for Women’s Golf and have worked in the field with Nick for many years. We have a Manager (Craig Coleman), a Treasurer (David Ramsey) and a couple of committee members John and Beth who also assist. How you have found the MYGolf program and the benefits? The kids like to receive the package sent to them from MYGolf. They like achieving the certificates and our club has bought gold, silver and bronze medals to be presented with the certificates. These have Mc Cormack Junior Golf on the back. Any tips and ideas you can give to run the program successfully? We have specific skills days bi-monthly when all skills are set up for all levels and the kids can move from one to the other with a clip board and their own skills sheet. The older group work in pairs and the younger group have parents to score for them. Parents are very happy with the MYGolf skills days and see real benefit for their children. During our normal coaching sessions we cover putting, chipping long game etc. but each session has a specific aim i.e. bunkers. We also have championships at the end of the year; personal best score awards and Open events for past members in Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. We are honoured to have Jack Newton visit our Open once a year and share some of the proceeds of his corporate day with our club. We also run two Pump events each year at Adelaide Shores and also coach and run Pump events at Port Lincoln, Port Augusta and Maitland. We are grateful to Jack Newton, West Beach Trust, Westward Ho Golf Club, The House of Golf and Adelaide Shores Pro Shop for their on-going sponsorship.
