The Royal Melbourne Senior Amateur is the fourth event for this week of competition on the Golf Victoria Senior calendar. Yarra Yarra, Kingston Heath, and Victoria Golf Clubs have each welcomed a tremendous turn out of local and interstate players.
A capacity field of 100 players took to the challenging West Course at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club. Wind gusts intensified as the day progressed to near unplayable conditions, making putting extremely difficult on Royal’s glass-like undulating greens. Earlier this year during the Royal Melbourne Seniors Classic, not a single player was able to break their handicap, and today was no different.
David McDonald from Sandhurst was a late call up for the event and made the most of his elevation into the starting field. McDonald was seemingly unfazed by the conditions, going out in 38 on the front 9 to eventually finish tied with Gary Easte (Spring Valley) on 81 off the stick. Easte won his first event at Rosanna earlier this year in the Yarra Courses Senior Amateur. The winner was decided on a count-back with McDonald taking out the title by a mere shot over Easte.
In the nett section, Gary proved to be a popular name amongst the winners. Gary House from Sanctuary Lakes (hcp 8) shot an impressive nett 76 to finish two shots ahead of Gary Easte and Gary Scott of Kooringal. Scott, a 15 marker, was awarded the runner-up prize as Easte had claimed the runner-up in the gross section.
After a busy week of golf, players will have the weekend off to relax before the fifth and final event this coming Monday at The Metropolitan Golf Club.
