McKinney masterclass rolls on

Perth-based Scotsman, Connor McKinney is through to the second round of match play at the 93rd R&A Boys’ Amateur Championship at Saunton.

McKinney recorded a convincing 6&4 victory over England’s Billy Groom in blustery conditions on the southwest English coast.

Tough conditions meant that par was enough to win most holes and McKinney limited his losses well to card only a single bogey during the match.

“With this wind, you can’t go for too much or miss in the wrong spots, so it was a case of hitting into the middle of the greens or even away from flags because the wind was so strong,” said McKinney.

“I only had two birdies and a bogey out there. It was just one of those days where there wasn’t a lot of birdies out there and if you made a lot of pars you were going to be close.

Fellow Joondalup member, Josh Greer has also progressed through to the second round of match play thanks to a hard-fought 2&1 win over Spaniard, Rodrigo Martin.

Greer is known as a tough and gritty match play contender and he will now face Norway’s Bard Bjornevik Skogen for a place in the Round of 16.

Kirsten Rudgeley, the lone Aussie in the R&A Girls’ Amateur Championship, has won her opening two matches to progress through to the third round of competition at Panmure.

The young Mount Lawley product cruised to a 5&4 victory over South African, Jordan Rothman in her morning match.

Rudgeley’s afternoon match against Adela Cernousek of France proved to be a much tighter affair with the young West Aussie eventually taking a 2&1 victory.
