McLachlin cruises to victory

Parker McLachlin cruised to a seven-stroke victory at the Reno-Tahoe Open on Sunday for his first career PGA Tour win. Despite carding a final-round two-over-par 74, McLachlin finished the tournament at 18-under-par 270. In what was pretty much a fruitless chase, Brian Davis finished a distant second after a three-over-par round on Sunday to finish 11-under for the tournament. Andrew Buckle and Steve Elkington were the best placed Australians, both finishing in a tie for 14th place at seven-under. Nick Flanagan&aposs weekend went from bad to worse, after sitting in a tie for second place at the halfway mark, the New South Welshman blew any chance of victory with five-over 77 in his third round. His fourth round was even worse, a 10-over 82, which had him finishing well down the leaderboard. Playing his 52nd career PGA Tour event, McLachlin had just three top-10 finishes – although two of them came this year at the Sony Open and AT&T Classic. The 29-year-old McLachlin put himself in great position to record his first win on Saturday when he fired a six-under 66 take a commanding six-stroke lead into the final round. That provided him with the cushion he needed to overcome some shaky play and earn the US dollars 540,000 first-prize purse. McLachlin played a bogey-free front nine, but bogeyed the par-four 10th hole. He rebounded to par the next five holes before bogeying the par-three 16th and the par-five 17th. But the five-year Tour veteran finished well with a birdie on 18 to triumph.
