Western Australia’s Ian McPherson won a dramatic Senior Men’s Match Play Championship at the 24th hole of the final today at Coolangatta and Tweed Heads Golf Club.
McPherson had a titanic final match against Trevor Box of Queensland, who led for much of the contest, with the Queenslander taking a one-up lead to the 18th hole, with one hand on the trophy.
But Box made an uncharacteristic six from the back fringe of the 18th, McPherson was able to win the hole and square the match, and they went to extra holes.
The pair halved five consecutive holes, both having excellent opportunities to win. Then at the par-three fifth hole, the 24th hole of the final, McPherson hit an iron shot to three metres and watched as Box was able to match his excellent shot.
Finally McPherson holed out for birdie to win.
It was the Joondalup Golf Club member’s second national matchplay win; he also won at 13th Beach in 2013.
Play had resumed on the final day after rain had shortened Tuesday’s play, with McPherson and Sal Ballard (NSW) needing to complete their semi-final; McPherson two up through 16 holes.
