Golf Australia&aposs &aposCALD&apos Project wrapped up in Melbourne last November as culturally and linguistically diverse women were given an introduction to the game of golf. Held at the Park Tower Complex and Albert Park Driving Range, PGA Professionals worked in conjunction with Golf Australia over four weeks to run clinics that were specially to teach the basics and create a desire for participants to learn more about the game. Women&aposs Golf Development Officer at Golf Australia, Alison Munt said, “It was great to see how many women were keen to come and try their hand at golf. For most, it was a very new experience and you could really sense their enjoyment. “The first couple of weeks we spent teaching the basics at the Park Tower residential complex before moving to the driving range at Albert Park where the women were able to put certain theories and skills learned into practice.” The four-week program was facilitated in conjunction with Local Government Consultant Jo Broom, Multicultural Liaison Officer from the City of Port Phillip Christina Del Frate, and Louise McDonald, Project Officer at Women&aposs Golf Victoria. Alison Munt continued, “I would like to thank the City of Port Phillip, Women&aposs Golf Victoria and our two PGA Professionals, Kate Nolan and Nicola Moult for their support over the last few months. “Like Golf Australia&aposs underlying vision, they recognise the importance of introducing the game to people all levels and helping to encourage a healthy and active attitude throughout the community.” Culturally and linguistically diverse women represent a significant sporting minority with figures suggesting that only 6.6% of women born outside English speaking countries are involved in sport as players. Therefore, the CALD Project has been an important stepping stone to try and engage more women in the game of golf.
